Enameled Cast Iron

SAFE

Cast iron with a glass-based enamel coating — no seasoning needed, no PFAS risk.

Generally Safe

This material is considered food-safe by major regulatory bodies.

What It Is

Enameled cast iron is a cast iron pan fused with a layer of porcelain enamel (glass fired at extremely high temperatures). The enamel provides a smooth, easy-clean surface without requiring oil seasoning. This combination gives the thermal mass advantages of cast iron with a non-reactive, non-porous cooking surface. Le Creuset and Staub are the premium flagship brands. Lodge also makes enameled cast iron at a lower price point.

Health Concerns

Enameled cast iron is considered food-safe. The enamel coating is glass-based — no PTFE, no PFAS. The only concern is chipped enamel: if the coating chips, small fragments can potentially enter food. Replace any enameled cookware with significant chips or cracks. At normal temperatures, there is no chemical leaching of concern.
